Marans originate in the port town of Marans, in the western region of France. Marans are typically an active yet docile dual purpose bird, with males reaching 8 pounds. The Silver Marans (also mistakenly called Birchen Marans) are a Marans breed being worked on by several breeders as we strive to get them accepted by the APA. While there is a Birchen Marans being developed, the Silver Marans can be identified by the lack of silver lacing on the chest for which the Birchen Marans are known. Instead it is being worked on to follow a similar standard as the Copper Marans. They offer a beautiful silver feathering around their necks and also lay a dark brown (or chocolate like) colored eggs. We will be raising both Black and Blue Silver Marans. We have been working for over a year with our Marans lines as we strive to achieve healthy, beautiful birds that can become a great representation of the breed we are striving to have accepted by the APA.
